If you checked out that course, you know the information Joan shares regarding this topic is massively valuable.
Self-editing is an incredibly important skill for the modern writer, but, of course, like so much in writing, it isn’t easy.
To edit your own work, you need to be able to:
- Prepare to Edit Your Own Writing - It's important to
examine your own attitude, discover any unconscious rules or assumptions that are getting in your way, give yourself permission to do things your way, and figure out how to overcome feeling overwhelmed.
- Assume Your Role as Editor - Getting objective distance on
your own work is one of the challenges of self-editing, so it's important to explore a variety of ways to do that in order to determine which way is your best way.
- Determine Your Best Approach - Every writer is
unique. What works best for someone else won't work best for you. Always pay attention to your own tendencies and go where your best energy takes you. Whatever works to get you into the editing is what you should do.
- Go Ahead and Edit - There are a
long list of things to tackle when it comes to editing your own work, and putting together a plan for both the big picture (macro) and the sentence-level (micro) stuff is so important. If you organize all these elements into a checklist, it becomes simple to go through that list and cross out every item. (This one really helps get over feeling daunted!)
None of these things come all that easily or naturally to many writers . . . luckily, Joan is here to help!
