There's an old joke in the publishing biz...

There's an old joke in the publishing business, and it goes something like this...

Wanna know how to make a small fortune in publishing?

Start with a large fortune.

Hardy, har, har. Right?

Like most jokes, it's funny because there's a kernel of truth to it.

The simple fact is your book isn't going to make you rich.

Derek Murphy, the cover designer of my novel The Page Turners: Economy of Fear, recently published a surprisingly thorough and largely depressing article, How Much Does the Average Author Earn Publishing their Book? in which he exposed just how little the vast majority of authors are bringing in.

So where does that leave us as authors? Are our books worthless?

Certainly not!

Your book can transform your life on all fronts, including financially, but only as part of a larger overall income strategy.

Whether you're a novelist or a non-fiction author, there are three pillars to a profitable, successful career: Your book, your business, and your brand. You must develop ALL THREE to create the visibility, opportunities, and income you want.

My friend Jesse Krieger can teach you how to do this. He has helped over 100 authors write, publish, and promote their books. He's got a wealth of knowledge about what's working in book publishing, as well as a Rolodex (remember those??) full of contacts of some of the most successful entrepreneurs and authors in the world – people like:

  • Natalie Sisson of the Suitcase Entrepreneur

  • Chandler Bolt, who built the seven-figure Self-Publishing School, and who I interviewed in episode 13 of The Writing Coach podcast.

  • Jason Van Orden, of Internet Business Mastery, one of the original internet marketing podcasts

Jesse has recently announced a free online event, the Book, Business & Brand Building Summit, where he's sharing the best information from his experience as well as concrete advice from 20+ uber-successful authors and entrepreneurs.

The event kicks off June 20 with live sessions each day. With people like Natalie, Chandler, and Jason (plus over a dozen more!), you'll want to check it out.

The event is structured around the three author success pillars I mentioned above, with experts discussing your book, your business, and your brand. Wherever you are in your book-writing journey, you'll hear career-changing ideas and advice. I've already reserved my spot. You should, too!

Your pal in writing,

Kevin T. Johns, writing coach

P.S. As I mentioned, registration for the summit is free. You'll get a limited time to access each interview. There's also an option to purchase unlimited access to the recordings – which I recommend getting, as you're going to want to review the info again. I'm also an affiliate for the event, so purchasing the recordings will throw a little love my way. :)
